1. Share into a known number of groups
Share 24 counters equally among 6 groups. Deal one counter to each group, then repeat until every counter is used. Each group has 4 counters: 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Here, four tells you how many counters are in one group.
2. Make groups of a known size
Put 24 counters into groups of 6. You can make 4 groups: 24 ÷ 6 = 4. The equation looks the same as before, but four now tells you the number of groups. Draw both stories and label what the four means.
3. Play a counter challenge
With a partner, choose a total such as 12, 18 or 24. One player chooses a group size that divides the total exactly. The other builds the groups and says the division equation. Swap roles and check by multiplying the number of groups by the group size.
4. Connect the fact family
From 6 × 4 = 24, write 4 × 6 = 24, 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6. Division does not generally work in either order: 24 ÷ 6 is not the same question as 6 ÷ 24. Keep the total and the groups in their correct places.

Share 20 beads equally among five bags. How many beads per bag?
20 ÷ 5 = 4 beads in each bag. Check: 5 × 4 = 20.
There are 28 buttons. Put seven in each group. How many groups?
28 ÷ 7 = 4 groups. Four groups of seven use all 28 buttons.
Complete 36 ÷ ? = 6.
The missing divisor is 6 because 36 ÷ 6 = 6, checked by 6 × 6 = 36.
